Cookies

Last updated: 1 September 2026

This page lists what this website stores on your device, and what you can turn off. It covers goechoo.com only — the Go Echoo app is a separate thing with its own privacy policy, and it sets nothing described here.

The short version

  • Four things are set without asking. They are what makes the site work at all: your language, a country hint, your light/dark choice and your sign-in.
  • One thing is optional: analytics. It is off until you say yes, and declining is a real answer that we keep.
  • Nothing optional loads before you choose. Not the script, not a request, not a cookie.

Set without asking

These four are strictly necessary under §25(2) TTDSG: without them the site cannot do the thing you asked it to do, so there is no switch for them. They are listed here rather than hidden behind one.

WhatWhereHow longWhy
NEXT_LOCALECookieA yearThe language you chose, so the site serves it. Without it every page load guesses again.
echo-countryCookieSessionA country hint written by our own server, used only to suggest a language. It is never a price signal.
echo-themeLocal storageUntil clearedLight or dark, so the site does not flash the wrong one on every load.
SessionCookieUntil you sign outKeeps you signed in, if you have an account. Only set once you sign in.

We also store your cookie choice itself, in local storage, under echo-consent. That is what stops the banner asking again on every page. It never leaves your browser.

Analytics, only if you agree

We would like to know which pages get read, so we know what to write more of. If you accept, we load Google Analytics 4. If you decline, none of the following happens at all.

WhatWhereHow longWhy
_gaCookieTwo yearsTells one browser apart from another, so two visits from you are not counted as two people.
_ga_<stream>CookieTwo yearsKeeps the state of a single visit for our measurement stream.

Accepting sends your IP address, the page you are on and your approximate location to Google Ireland Limited, which may transfer it to Google LLC in the United States under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. We ask Google to shorten your IP address. The legal basis is your consent: GDPR Art. 6(1)(a), and §25(1) TTDSG for the storage itself.

What we get out of it is page counts. We do not use it to build a profile of you, we do not join it to your account, and there is no advertising on this site to target.

Changing your mind

“Cookie choice” at the bottom of any page reopens the banner, and you can answer it differently. Declining after having accepted switches analytics off and deletes the cookies it set. It does not make the measuring we already did unlawful, but it stops any more of it.

You can also clear cookies in your browser, which achieves the same thing for the optional ones. Clearing the necessary ones is fine too — the site will simply ask for your language again.
